The Baxter County Library is inviting the community to explore Arkansas history and the nation’s early years with a special exhibit and a week of family-friendly programs celebrating America 250.
America 250 marks the 250th anniversary, also known as the semi-quincentennial, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Visitors can currently view the exhibit Arkansas/Arkansaw: A State and Its Reputation, which will remain on display at the library through April 2. Curated by historian Brooks Blevins, the exhibit explores how Arkansans have been portrayed throughout history, from rugged pioneers to subjects of the “hillbilly” stereotype.
Through historical sources and cultural reflections, the exhibit examines how these perceptions developed, how Arkansans have responded to them and how those images continue to influence views of the state today. The exhibit is free and does not require registration.
The library will also host a special program Saturday, titled America 250 U.S. History Treats & Trivia: The Early Years. The event will run from 10:30 to 11:30 and invites participants of all ages to form teams and test their knowledge of early U.S. history, covering topics from colonial times through 1776.
Participants will also enjoy treats, friendly competition and prizes for the top teams.
Those interested can sign up at BaxLib.org/Events. Organizers ask teams larger than five people to email jamie.v@baxlib.org in advance so enough supplies are available.
