A semi-truck carrying thousands of pounds of tofu remains lodged under Interstate 44 more than three weeks after a crash.
According to the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District, the crash happened March 1 near exit 172 at Jerome when the truck struck a guardrail, sending about 40,000 pounds of extra-firm tofu beneath the overpass.
Officials say cleanup has proven to be a logistical challenge. The Missouri Department of Transportation is working with the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency to determine how to safely remove the cargo.
Authorities are also coordinating with the trucking company’s insurance provider to determine responsibility for cleanup costs.
In the meantime, officials say the tofu has begun to decompose, creating a strong odor in the area.
