A Gamaliel man classified as a registered sex offender was taken into custody Thursday morning after authorities say he failed to comply with reporting requirements.

Thirty-six-year-old Jesse Aaron Avant reported to the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office for a mandatory verification appointment. During the meeting, Avant told authorities he only possessed a cell phone and a gaming device and did not have any email or social media accounts.

A follow-up visit to his residence by law enforcement and a probation officer led to the recovery of his phone. Deputies say the device contained multiple social media accounts that had not been disclosed as required by law.

According to the report, Avant became agitated when confronted and refused to calm down, prompting his arrest.

Avant was transported to the Baxter County Detention Center on a felony charge of failure to comply with registration and reporting requirements and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. His bond was set at $15,000, and he is scheduled to appear in circuit court March 30.
