Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders addressed lawmakers Wednesday as the legislature opened its fiscal session, outlining a proposed $6.7 billion budget and her priorities for the year.
The plan represents a three percent increase over the previous budget and includes an additional $122 million for Education Freedom Accounts, along with $70 million set aside for future growth. More than 70 bills have already been filed for the session.
Sanders began her address by acknowledging the March death of Rep. Stan Berry before turning to her legislative agenda, which she said centers on continued support for the LEARNS Act.
The governor pointed to teacher pay raises and student improvements as signs of progress under the program and called on lawmakers to fully fund it.
Sanders also highlighted efforts to address food insecurity, noting expanded access to free school breakfasts and summer meal programs.
Law enforcement funding was another priority. Sanders said the proposed budget fully funds raises for state law enforcement officers and corrections staff announced in 2024.
The governor also emphasized cost-cutting measures through her Arkansas Forward Initiative, which she said has eliminated unused contracts and renegotiated services, saving millions of dollars. She estimates the initiative could lead to $300 million in total savings.
Sanders discussed her 10:33 initiative as well, describing it as a program aimed at connecting people in need with community resources to break cycles of dependency.
Tax cuts were also a key focus. The governor cited recent reductions to state income taxes and the elimination of the grocery tax, and said she would consider calling a special session to pursue additional cuts.
