Arkansas Democrats are criticizing Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ policy agenda following her State of the State address, saying it does not reflect the needs of many residents.
The governor has proposed a $6.7 billion budget that includes increased funding for law enforcement and the state’s school voucher program, along with additional income tax cuts expected to be taken up in a future special session.
State Sen. Fred Love, Sanders’ Democratic opponent in the upcoming election, said the address highlights what he called a disconnect between the governor’s message and the realities facing Arkansas families.
“When I look at what this administration is spending our money on and what it’s choosing not to, I must ask, whose side is the governor on?” Love said.
The legislative session is expected to focus heavily on the proposed budget, including funding for Education Freedom Accounts tied to the LEARNS Act.
Some lawmakers from both parties have raised concerns about the voucher program, including how funds are used and whether enough oversight is in place.
House Minority Leader Andrew Collins said rural areas often have fewer private school options and that vouchers may not cover full tuition costs.
Republicans hold large majorities in both chambers of the legislature, making it difficult for Democrats to block the governor’s proposals.
Tax cuts are also expected to be a key issue. Sanders has supported multiple rounds of income tax reductions since taking office, while Democrats argue the cuts could impact funding for public services.
The fiscal session is underway, with lawmakers expected to debate spending priorities and policy proposals in the weeks ahead.
