The Kansas City Chiefs made two major defensive additions Thursday night in the NFL Draft.
Kansas City traded up three spots to select LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane with the No. 6 overall pick, then used the 29th selection to take Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods.
The Chiefs sent picks No. 9, 74 and 148 to Cleveland to move up and secure Delane, addressing a major need in the secondary following the offseason departure of Trent McDuffie.
Delane is coming off an All-American season and is expected to step into a key role in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system.
Later in the first round, Kansas City used the pick acquired in the McDuffie trade to select Woods, adding depth to the defensive line behind veteran Chris Jones.
Woods, a 6-foot-2, 298-pound defensive tackle, fills another key need as the Chiefs look to strengthen their front.
The selection of Delane marks the team’s highest draft pick since taking Eric Fisher first overall in 2013.
