Arkansas officials are considering the possibility of raising the speed limits on the state’s highways, and the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT) is seeking public input. According to agency officials, a draft copy of ArDOT’s 2017 Speed Limit Review is now available for comment.

Since the repeal of the National Maximum Speed Law in 1995, the authority to establish speed limits on state highway systems has rested with each individual state. ArDOT conducted an engineering and traffic investigation to determine the feasibility of increasing speed limits after the 91st General Assembly of the Arkansas State Legislature passed Act 1097 to “Amend the Law Concerning Speed Limits” earlier this year. The Arkansas Highway Commission later passed a minute order accepting the draft study during an October 18th meeting and is now publishing the study for a 45-day public comment period.

The study will remain available for comment until December 13th. The Speed Limit Review and comment form are available online at arkansashighways.com/speed_study.
