Allen Kee / ESPN(ST. LOUIS) – The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Thursday that the team has agreed to a three-year contract extension with its manager Mike Matheny.
Matheny has been the team’s manager since 2012, when he inherited a World Series winning team from Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa. Since taking over as skipper, the Cardinals have gone 461-349, including a run of four straight playoff appearances.
Although St. Louis did not make the playoffs this season, Cardinals principal owner and CEO Bill DeWitt, Jr. seemed pleased with his manager. In a team release, he said, “Mike has continued the Cardinals tradition of winning in his first five years as manager, and we are happy to extend his contract leading our club on the field through 2020.”
Other coaching moves made by the Cardinals on Thursday included moving first-base coach Bill Mueller to assistant hitting coach. Former assistant hitting coach Derrick May will not return. All other coaches on the club’s Major League team will be back for the 2017 season.
