Thursday night’s Cotter School Board meeting included discussion of the potential FEMA safe room and several personnel changes.

The board voted to retain Architecture Plus, Inc. for the potential FEMA safe room construction. Superintendent Vanessa Thomas-Jones says the district is applying for a FEMA grant to cover the cost of the safe room and early estimates indicate the safe room will be approximately 6,000 square feet, constructed adjacent to the school’s cafeteria.

In personnel matters, the board terminated the contract of Chad Wheeler, approved extended leave requests for three employees, rescinded the job offer made to David Beard, accepted Karlee Taylor’s resignation and offered employment contracts to Cash Reeves for the position of physical education and social studies teacher and to Corey Rose for custodian for the 2018-2019 school year. Additionally, the board voted to add the duties of softball coach to Jared Wilhite’s contract, the duties of track coach to Jackson Rains’ contract and the duties of High School Annual Advisor to Andrea Kray’s contract.

In other business, the board approved a milk bid from Hiland Dairy, a bread bid from C & K Breads & Snacks Inc. and a cleaning supplies bid from Pippin Wholesale Company. The board heard an E-rate presentation and accepted a bid from White River Services & Solutions for $90,281, of which the school will pay $13,542, with USAC funds covering the remaining $76,739. A bid was also approved from Mountain Home Painting and Remodeling, Inc. to re-paint the exterior of the high school building at a cost of $13,000.
