Mountain Home High School sophomore Ben Camp’s Eagle Scout project has resulted in the placement of 14 automated external defibrillators or AEDs in the local school system.
When it was time to decide on an Eagle Scout project, Camp did not have to look very far. As the son of Dr. Michael Camp, a cardiologist, and Kelli Camp, a registered nurse practitioner, the 15-year-old’s choice to replace the AEDs came naturally. With two parents in the healthcare field, Camp knew the importance of having updated, functional AEDs in his school district.
Camp has been working on his Eagle Scout project for the Westark Area Council Troop 156 for more than a year and a half. He worked with his aunt, Dr. Leigh Anne Gigliotti, the assistant superintendent at Mountain Home Public Schools, and determined the manufacturer no longer made replacement parts for the seven current AEDs.
Barney Larry, vice president of business development and the executive director of the Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation, says he was particularly impressed with Camp’s presentation.
Camp hoped to raise enough money to replace the seven state-required AEDs in the school buildings, but after presentations to the council troop, he had collected enough money for four of those AEDs and inspired BRMC and the hospital foundation to donate an additional 10 to place in the school district’s auditorium, in the indoor baseball/softball practice facility, in the central office, at the new baseball/softball complex, in the district transportation department, and one device to carry on school trips.
District superintendent Dr. Jake Long is grateful for Camp’s dedication to this project.
Camp’s project is just one component of earning the rank of Eagle Scout. In addition to the project and the presentation of his project’s results, Camp will have to earn several additional merit badges that involve him displaying excellent leadership and citizenship qualities. One way he will display leadership is through the installation of the AEDs. Camp will lead his troop in the installation of the AEDs with help from the district maintenance staff during the school’s Christmas Break.
The plaques above the AEDs will also brandish the Boy Scout motto: “Be Prepared.”
