NEWPORT, Ark. (AP) Residents of about 30 homes in northeast Arkansas have
been urged to leave after heavy rains eroded a nearby levee.
The advisory for residents in rural Jackson County is not mandatory and the
levee has not failed. But County Judge Jeff Phillips says he issued the warning
Tuesday night out of an abundance of caution.
Heavy rain fell earlier this week throughout the state. The White River near
Newport, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Little Rock, was nearing
major flood stage as of midday Wednesday. The National Weather Service says the
river’s levels are expected to gradually drop over the next week.
Elsewhere in the state, floodwaters caused a county road in Forrest City to
collapse, but no one was injured.
