Jeffrey Scott Shepherd

A Mountain Home man has been charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution in connection with a case resulting in 22-year-old Kyle James Tilley being given a 10-year prison sentence earlier this month.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Wednesday, 37-year-old Jeffery Scott Shepherd was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center Monday with a bond of $5,000.

Shepherd’s felony charge stems from attempts to capture Tilley in July in connection with a long string of crimes committed during a six-month period beginning in January.

Tilley was charged with residential burglary, breaking or entering, theft of property, theft by receiving and fleeing. On two occasions, he is alleged to have stolen items from close relatives who lived near Tilley along Hopewell Hollow Road.

Family members of Tilley told law enforcement they had seen a white pickup truck traveling up and down State Highway 177 in the area were the Jordan-area man was eluding officers. Shepherd was known to drive a pickup similar to the one Tilley’s relatives reported.

Officers converged at Shepherd’s residence along State Highway 5 south in Salesville, after receiving a tip Tilley had been spotted there. A female at the residence said Shepherd was not there, and she had not seen Tilley for several days.

Later in the day, officers returned to the residence, after spotting a white truck in the driveway. They made contact with Shepherd, who denied having had contact with Tilley. Shepherd was reminded Tilley was wanted.

Two days later, on July 22, information was obtained indicating Tilley was staying at a Mountain Home motel. Mountain Home Police and a bail bond agent went to the motel and learned Tilley was indeed staying there. Contact was made, and Tilley was taken into custody without incident.

The motel clerk provided documents showing the room Tilley was in was rented in Shepherd’s name for a two-night stay.

The clerk reported Shepherd said he and his wife would be staying in the room. However, video surveillance shows Shepherd and Tilley entering the side door of the motel with no female present.

Police said at the time of his arrest, Tilley had a small caliber handgun with him.
