Courtesy of Eagle Rock Entertainment/ AXS TVThe latest episode of the AXS TV series Brian Johnson‘s A Life on the Road features the longtime AC/DC frontman chatting with Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason while checking out Mason’s impressive rare car collection.
During the show, which premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, Mason recalls how he met band mate Roger Waters and reflects on Pink Floyd’s early days.
Nick explains that he, Waters and founding Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright all met while attending the Regent Street Polytechnic school in London.
“We were all training to be architects,” he notes, adding with a laugh, “It was architecture’s loss, I think, that the music took off…or not.”
Mason remembers that he and Waters first crossed paths because Roger knew he had a car and wanted to borrow it.
“I’m not sure that he knew what the car was, because, actually, it was an [old] Austin 7 Chummy, with a top speed of, like, 20 mile an hour and no brakes,” Nick points out. “But when he asked whether I might lend it to him, I said ‘no.'”
Mason also notes that Waters approached Wright looking to bum a cigarette from him, and Rick turned down his request as well, which, he quips, “sort of set the pattern, really, for the next 50 years.”
Johnson then comments that Roger was “a bit of a bum, wasn’t he?”
Nick responds, “Listen, it was an important moment [meeting Waters], because if it hadn’t been for that, we might not be sitting here now.”
In a separate preview video, Mason explains that he had only been playing drums for a short period of time when Pink Floyd was signed to a record deal and began touring constantly.
