Inside diners at all McDonald’s will be required to wear face masks beginning Aug. 1.

In an announcement Friday, Joe Erling, president, McDonald’s USA and Mark Salebra, national franchise leadership alliance chair, say the company is taking three additional steps to confront the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the face mask requirement, additional protective panels will be added and the reopening of dining rooms will be paused for another 30 days.

Officials say while nearly 82% of their restaurants are in states or localities that require facial coverings for both crew and customers, it’s important they protect the safety of all employees and customers.

To ensure McDonald’s is best able to create even safer conditions for its employees and customers, they have developed a series of divider panels and retrofit barrier solutions for both front- and back-of-house. These conditions-based solutions are designed to safely allow owner/operators to increase order taking and seating capacity, as well as staffing levels, while continuing to meet social distancing guidelines. The panels are an additional safety measure and not a replacement for consistent PPE execution or adherence to social distancing guidelines.

Finally, to further their efforts to slow the surge in COVID-19 cases and protect restaurant teams and customers, they will extend their pause on reopening dining rooms for another 30 days. This means they will not approve the reopening of any additional dining rooms.

Locally, any dining room roll back decisions should be guided by state and local guidance.
