An Izard County woman has been arrested for assaulting her granddaughter during an argument over a missing e-cigarette and refusing to let another relative answer the door when law enforcement arrived. Four charges, including two felonies, have been filed against 66-year-old Janice Joan Elumbaugh of Pineville.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the case, Izard County sheriff’s deputies were called to the residence Monday. Deputies found the victim in a truck near the house who said she and her grandmother had gotten into an argument over an e-cigarette that had gone missing. The victim says her grandmother started pushing her and then choking her. The victim then elbowed Elumbaugh and punched her in the face to get her to stop choking her, but she says Elumbaugh continued hitting her as she tried walking away.

The victim was taken by ambulance to get medical treatment.

When deputies went to the residence, there was no answer when they knocked. Shortly after leaving, the sheriff’s office received a call from a third party stating there was a 15-year-old female in the residence who had witnessed the fight but could not leave the house because Elumbaugh would not let her.

Shortly after arriving back at the residence, the second victim exited the house and Elumbaugh was arrested. The second victim, also a relative, told deputies she saw Elumbaugh grab the other victim by the throat and started dragging her out of the house. She says once the other victim was out of the house, Elumbaugh locked her in her room and watched her.

The 15-year-old was able to contact a friend through Snapchat to advise what was going on and to contact law enforcement.

Elumbaugh is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault on a family or household member and intimidating a witness and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor. She is free on $20,000 bond.
