For several schools around Arkansas, the high school football season is less than a week from getting started, and one area school will hit the gridiron for the first time ever. Izard County will start its first year of eight-man football by hosting Mountain View on Friday.
Jared Johnson is serving as the Cougars’ inaugural head coach, and he says there’s a lot of hype and excitement around the district for the upcoming season.
Listen:
Izard County will take on a Mountain View team that has had a football program for a long time, but this will also be their first eight-man game after switching from the traditional 11-on-11 format. Johnson says that makes scouting the Yellowjackets a little more difficult.
Listen:
Izard County Superintendent Fred Walker has been posting regular updates on the construction project of Cougar Stadium and Track and Field Complex to the district’s social media accounts. Johnson says there are still a few things needing completion, but they’re hoping to have the venue ready for Friday night.
Listen:
Kickoff is scheduled for 7. For Izard County students, admission will be free of charge.
Prior to the game, a Cougar football tailgate for seventh through 12th grades will be held starting at 3:15. The tailgate will include food, games and giveaways. Anyone looking to attend should contact Sarah Burns at sarah.burns@iccougars.org.
