‘The Silent Struggle’ 5k Walk/Run raises awareness for postpartum depression

A new fundraising event is coming up next month to raise awareness of postpartum depression. Dr. Maureen Flowers, Brooke Hinrichs and the city of Cotter will be hosting “The Silent Struggle” 5k Walk/Run June 1 at Big Spring Park.

Nationwide statistics show one out of seven women struggle with postpartum depression, but the state of Arkansas has the highest suicide rate among postpartum and pregnant mothers. Dr. Flowers says there is a number of signs and symptoms to look for in postpartum depression.

May is Postpartum Depression Awareness Month, and Dr. Flowers says she and Hinrichs wanted to create a way to raise money to fund needed treatment.

A registration event will be held May 31 from 10 to 4 at the park for participants to obtain a t-shirt and a number, and the race will start at 7:30 the next morning. The entry fee is $25. For those wanting to donate but not participate in the race, click here. Hinrichs says proceeds will benefit the new Women’s Empowerment Fund.
