As 2025 begins, a potential winter weather system is on the horizon, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Joe Goudsward.

“We are watching the potential of some winter weather,” Goudsward said, highlighting the weekend and into next week as key periods to monitor. Current forecast models suggest conditions may be less severe than initially expected. “Right now, the computer models that we use are trending warmer and warmer. So it might not be as bad as initially thought, but again, we’ll have to take a wait-and-see approach.”

If winter weather does occur, it is likely to feature freezing rain and some snow. “Right now, the accumulation does not look crazy or anything like that,” Goudsward noted.

The more pressing concern may come after the system passes. “The bigger story might be the very cold weather coming in behind this weather system,” he said. “Temperatures early next week are definitely going to be dropping. It looks like a surge of arctic air is coming on in.”
