Saturday basketball results include Izard County girls, Melbourne boys advancing to state finals

The Izard County High School girls’ basketball team has punched its ticket to Hot Springs after its semifinal game in the Class 2A State Tournament Saturday at Cedar Ridge High School in Newark. The Lady Cougars defeated Quitman by a final of 63-52. Izard County improves to 31-4 on the year, and they’ll face Barton for the title Thursday at noon at Bank OZK Arena.
Izard County’s boys were looking to join their female counterparts in Hot Springs, but their quest came up short. The Cougars suffered a 55-47 defeat to Tuckerman. Izard County’s season ends at 26-12.

The Izard County girls will be joined in Hot Springs by Melbourne’s boys following their semifinal game in the Class 3A State Tournament on the south campus of North Arkansas College in Harrison. The Bearkatz put the mercy rule in effect as they routed Lamar 76-40. Melbourne is now 29-7, and their state championship matchup will be with Osceola Thursday evening at 7:45.
On the girls’ side of the bracket, the Mountain View girls’ season came to an end in the second semifinal. The Lady Yellowjackets ended up falling to unbeaten Dover 59-44. Mountain View’s final record is 28-9.

Two area girls’ teams were eliminated in the semifinals of the Class 1A State Tournament at Trumann.
Rural Special ended up losing to 1A-2 conference foe Greers Ferry West Side by a score of 62-58. The Lady Rebels wrap up the season at 31-10.
The evening session ended with Jasper falling to Earle 67-47. The Lady Pirates’ season concludes with a mark of 28-10.

In Missouri, West Plains’ girls are one win away from a return to the state tournament. The Lady Zizzers topped Springfield Hillcrest 72-51 in the semifinals of the Class 5, District 6 Tournament at Willard. West Plains improves to 19-8, and they’ll take on Marshfield for the district title on Tuesday.

The Branson girls were bounced from the Class 6, District 5 Tournament at Ozark. The Lady Pirates lost to Nixa 70-30 in the semifinals. Branson ends its season at 16-11.
