Marshall boys lead area track teams by finishing 4th in Class 2A

The last of the state championship meets for high school track in Arkansas was held on Monday with Classes 1A and 2A being decided at Quitman.

The top performing team from the area was Marshall’s boys as they finished fourth among the Class 2A boys’ teams. Cotter was tied for 24th place, and Izard County ended up in a three-way tie for 26th. Fordyce came away with the state title.

Marshall’s Jake Massey won the 200-meter dash and took second place in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes and third in the triple jump, and fellow Bobcat Toby Campbell won the discus throw.

For the Class 2A girls, Izard County finished in a three-way tie for 19th place, Marshall was tied for 24th, and Cotter ended up in a three-way tie for 28th. Quitman was able to keep the championship trophy at home.

The best individual performance came from Akynna Nielsen of Izard County as she took fourth place in the 400-meter dash.

In the Class 1A girls’ division, Omaha finished sixth, Rural Special was 16th, Viola and Timbo ended up tied for 18th place, Calico Rock finished in a tie for 23rd, and Lead Hill took 29th place. The Class 1A girls’ title was captured by Magazine.

Omaha’s Riley Hopson won the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs and was third in the triple jump, Missy Wilson of Viola ended up second in the 3200-meter run, and Omaha’s Maddie Pyshny took second place in the pole vault. Omaha’s team of Pyshny, Brooklyn Stone, Kadien Gilbert and Morgan Schmidt won the 4×400-meter relay.

Among the boys in Class 1A, Lead Hill finished 10th, Timbo was 13th, Calico Rock and Rural Special ended up tied for 16th, Omaha finished tied for 22nd, and Viola was tied for 31st place. The championship was captured by Founders Classical Academy.

In the high jump, Landon Russell of Calico Rock came up with the win, Timbo’s Kaleb Patrick took second place, and Nolan Turner of Lead Hill ended up tied for third. Timbo’s Casen Cowell took second place in the pole vault. Rural Special’s team of Jake Currie, Shane McBroom, Waylon Pagett and Brayden Watts finished third in the 4×800-meter relay.
