Hawes gets probation

Derek Hawes, who has, at various times, listed addresses in Center Ridge, Morrilton and Mountain Home, pled guilty to charges against him during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday and was given six years probation and 90 days in the county jail with credit for 51 days served while awaiting disposition of his case. The 27-year-old Hawes was developed as a suspect in a theft from a vehicle parked at a local restaurant in early February. The victim, who was inside the restaurant, said he saw a male in his vehicle and ran outside. The suspect, later identified as Hawes, bolted from the victim’s vehicle, got into the backseat of a Chevrolet Trail Blazer and sped off.

The victim, who was able to describe the person inside his truck and to get the license number off the get-away car, told police that the man had taken his jacket, cell phone and tools. The items were valued at $300.

Investigators developed Hawes as a suspect and were able to speak to the driver of the Trail Blazer. The driver said he had accompanied Hawes to Mountain Home from Conway for a court date. The driver said as they were parked at the restaurant, Hawes said he would be back shortly and exited the vehicle.

The driver said he then saw Hawes running toward his vehicle being pursued by the owner of the truck from which Hawes had removed the jacket, cell phone and tools. He said Hawes jumped into the Trail Blazer and they drove off.

In addition to fine, fees and court costs, Hawes was ordered by the court to pay $300 in restitution.
