A new ordinance passed by the Cotter City Council in late June officially legalizes the use of golf carts on city streets.

For years, residents have driven golf carts under an informal, self-monitored system. But with recent growth and a noticeable increase in cart traffic, the city has adopted formal regulations aimed at improving safety and defining where and how the vehicles may be used.

The cities of Gassville, Norfork, Bull Shoals and Lakeview already have similar ordinances in place. Cotter Mayor Mac Caradine says safety remains the city’s top priority.

The annual registration fee is $12, and the mayor says the city has worked to keep both the cost and the registration process simple.

Under the ordinance, drivers must be at least 16 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and operate golf carts only on city streets- not on state highways. The ordinance does not allow the use of ATVs or UTVs within Cotter city limits.

Residents with questions can contact the Mayor’s Office at Cotter City Hall by calling (870) 435-6326 or visiting in person at 115 Mc Lean Avenue.
