Many motorcycle enthusiasts were celebrating a motorcycle event called the La Raza Run at Chicano Park when a GNC pickup truck fell about 60 feet from Coronado Bridge after the driver lost control and struck a guardrail, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Jake Sanchez said.

There were two major injuries, including the driver who was transported to UC San Diego Health, according to Sanchez. He said there were also seven moderate injuries and all were transported to different hospitals.

The driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury or death, Sanchez said.

Rescue crews and San Diego Police, who were already in Chicano Park for the event, reached the scene within minutes, according to San Diego Fire Chief Brian Fennessey.

“When they arrived, they did find the vehicle on its side and on top of four individuals,” Fennessey said at a news conference Saturday.

The fire chief called the crash a “tragic” event.

“You know it’s just tragic, anything that size, any vehicle coming off of an elevation like that and landing on people, the outcome is just not going to be good,” Fennessey said.
