Fewer traditional students receive lottery scholarships

(AP) – Since a change in eligibility for lottery-funded
scholarships, fewer traditional Arkansas college students are applying for and
receiving the scholarships.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that 11,606 high school graduates were
provided scholarships this year, down 1,559 from last year. The number of
applicants declined by 3,275 to 16,547.
The drop is attributed to a 2015 state law that now requires high school
graduates to have an ACT score of 19 or better – or the equivalent on a
comparable college entrance exam – to be eligible. Previous law called for
graduates to complete certain curriculum and have either a high school
grade-point average of at least 2.5 or a minimum ACT score of 19.
Traditional students are those who enter college immediately after graduating
high school.
