(AP) – A Jonesboro City Council committee is set to consider a
proposal that would exempt pot-bellied pigs from an ordinance that bans live
swine within the city limits, which may stop any legal trouble for a local
family.
Animal Control officers issued a warning citation giving the Barkley family
until Aug. 29 to remove their two pot-bellied pigs, Wilber and Fern, from the
city. The deadline was eventually dropped after the family talked to the City
Council, and officials agreed to look for a way to permit domesticated
pot-bellied pigs.
The Jonesboro Sun reports that the proposal will be considered Tuesday. The
proposal would require owners to apply for a license with Animal Control and for
the pig to be spayed or neutered. Pig would not be allowed to be kept outdoors
on a permanent basis or weigh more than 175 pounds.
