(AP) – A group hoping to build a new soccer stadium in St. Louis says
it is postponing its planned meeting with a state finance board so it can meet
with Missouri’s incoming governor, who is critical of the project.
Principles of the stadium-minded SC STL were to meet Tuesday with the Missouri
Development Finance Board over a request to approve $40 million in state tax
credits for the stadium.
But on Monday, Republican Gov.-elect Eric Greitens announced he opposes
taxpayer money to help build the new stadium, calling the project “nothing more
than welfare for millionaires.”
SC STL chairman Paul Edgerley said in a statement Tuesday the group is
“disappointed” by the remarks and hopes to meet with him to fully understand his
position and lobby about the project’s benefits.
