FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) _ Despite a once-promising start to the season,

Arkansas’ hopes for returning to national prominence have never seemed as far as

away as they did following an 84-78 home loss to Mississippi State.

The Razorbacks (12-4, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) dropped from 27th to 41st in

the NCAA’s RPI ratings with Tuesday night’s loss, which marked the first time

since the 2008-09 season the school has started conference play with

back-to-back home defeats.

Arkansas has reached the NCAA Tournament only once in coach Mike Anderson’s

first five seasons.

The expectations this season were that the Razorbacks would make it for a

second time under Anderson, particularly with the return of preseason SEC Player

of the Year Moses Kinglsey and three of the top junior-college recruits in the

country.
