LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – A Republican legislator who wants to reinstate Arkansas’ voter ID law has proposed adding a way for people who don’t show identification to cast a provisional ballot if they sign a statement.

But opponents of law say the change doesn’t erase their concerns that the requirement will disenfranchise thousands of Arkansas voters.

The amendment to the voter ID measure would allow voters without photo ID to cast a provisional ballot if they sign a statement confirming their identity. The ballot will be counted unless the county board of election commissioners determines it’s invalid for other reasons.

The House-based voter ID bill is aimed at reinstating a 2013 voter ID law that the Arkansas Supreme Court found unconstitutional in 2014. It’s to go before a Senate panel next week.
