Gainesville’s season ends in sectional game

It was a rough outing in Mountain Grove for the Gainesville High School girls’ basketball team as their season came to an end Wednesday in the Class 2 State Tournament. Matt Sharp has the details.

Neelyville dominated on the boards, used an 11-1 run midway through the first quarter to take the lead for good and defeated the Lady Bulldogs 68-51 in the sectional round. The Lady Tigers committed 23 turnovers in the contest, but their work on the rebounds and the defensive end helped them secure the win. Neelyville outrebounded Gainesville 34-17. The Lady Bulldogs did make a run in the second half cutting the Lady Tigers’ lead to seven, but Neelyville pulled away in the end for the 17-point victory.

Michia Jenkins led Gainesville with 22 points, and Annie Noah added 18. For the Lady Tigers, Jentri Worley scored 27 points, and J’Kayla Fowler chipped in 18.

Neelyville improves to 22-4 on the season, and they’ll head to Poplar Bluff on Saturday to compete in the state quarterfinals. The Lady Bulldogs’ final record is 28-2.
