Osborn Eugene Gavel of Cotter, one of two men identified as suspects in a robbery at a local marina as the result of surveillance video images being posted on Facebook by the Baxter County Sheriff's Office, appeared in Circuit Court Thursday and entered a not guilty plea to charges against him.
The 18-year-old Gavel faces three counts of felony breaking or entering and three counts of misdemeanor theft of property. He was released from the Baxter County Detention Center Friday afternoon after posting a bond of $5,510.
Gavel and another man were captured on video surveillance gaining access to the Buzzard Roost Marina by climbing over a locked gate on the night of February 22nd. They could then be seen going up and down the walkway at the dock and removing items from an uncovered boat. A kayak was also reported taken.
After video images from the surveillance cameras were posted, a number of people named Gavel as one of the men. The other person was identified as 33-year-old David Smith. According to the Baxter County Sheriff's Office, Smith had recently been arrested on other charges and was wearing the same shirt with its distinctive design on the front in his booking photo taken at the time of his arrest on the earlier charges as he had on in the video from the dock.
Smith's cap also had the logo of a local company on it and personnel at the plant identified Smith as the second person shown on the surveillance video.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Gavel was located on March 6th and came to the Sheriff's Office where he is said to have admitted going onto the dock with Smith and taking fishing rods and the kayak. Gavel said he had also taken two beers from a cooler on the dock.
Gavel was ordered to reappear in Circuit Court on March 23rd.
Smith apparently is still being sought.
