A Hartford, Kentucky woman has been arrested by Fulton County authorities following a gas drive off in Salem in a stolen vehicle that she later crashed after fleeing from a patrolman. The same woman was the subject of a missing person report filed at the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office.

Fulton County Sheriff Al Roork says a Salem patrolman attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Shantele Kirkman for a gas drive off at a Salem convenience store August 2. Kirkman fled on Highway 9 north in a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Kentucky. Approximately 11 miles north of Salem, Kirkman crashed the car and was taken into custody.

She was charged with DWI third offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, felony fleeing, driving on a suspended license, theft of motor fuel, shoplifting, felony theft by receiving, possession of a controlled substance schedule two, reckless driving and possession of an instrument of a crime.

At the time of Sheriff Roork’s report, Kirkman was being held in the Fulton County Detention Center. The amount of her bond was not provided in his report. Kirkman is scheduled to appear in Fulton County Circuit Court on August 22.

On Sunday evening, the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office took a missing person report from a man identifying himself as Kirkman’s friend. The man said he had last seen Kirkman on August 1 when she and two other individuals left his residence along Baxter County Road 623.

The man said Kirkman had told him the male and female traveling with her were hitchhikers she had picked up in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Kirkman allegedly told her friend she took the two to Branson for medical treatment but the hospital there would not take them so she brought them to his house to spend the night.

Kirkman’s friend said she called the two John and Mary, and they told him they were traveling for Jesus. The following morning, Kirkman told her friend she was going to drive the pair to the highway and “get rid of them.”

After the group left, Kirkman’s friend noticed he was missing several food items, some jewelry, a camera and $85 in cash. The friend contacted Kirkman and advised of the missing items. She responded she was bringing the two back along with the missing items. However, she did not return.

The man advised the sheriff’s office he was concerned something had happened to Kirkman and the two traveling with her may be responsible.

Kirkman’s friend left a food container with the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office that the traveling companions were eating from at his residence, saying it may have evidence to help identify them. The container was placed into evidence and turned over to the Criminal Investigation Division.
