A Mountain Home man has been arrested and charged with theft of property for allegedly taking items from a residence while the homeowner was hospitalized.

Jail records indicate 27-year-old Christopher Scott Smith was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center Tuesday afternoon and bonded out within the hour.

According to the arrest affidavit, the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office received a report on July 25 from a Mountain Home resident advising three firearms, a generator, battery charger, and other assorted tools and ammunition were missing when he returned from his hospital stay.

After a number of items fitting the description of the stolen ones was located at a local pawn shop, officers questioned Smith who denied taking the property and consented to a search of his residence. Offices located a battery charger that fit the description of the missing item, as well as a box of ammunition matching the calibers of the stolen firearms.

Smith advised officers the battery charger belonged to his wife and the ammunition was in the home when they moved there. Smith’s wife said she did not know where the items came from.

Christopher Smith was charged with felony theft of property, with his bond set at $3,500. He is scheduled to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court in September.
