Local basketball teams have mixed results in Marvin Newton Classic

Some local high school basketball teams gathered at Viola on Black Friday for the annual Marvin Newton Classic.

Mammoth Spring’s girls came out on the short end as they fell to Valley Springs 60-46. Brianna Hocum led the Lady Bears with 14 points. Mammoth Spring drops to 10-3 on the season, and they’ll head to Calico Rock Tuesday to continue district play.

In the other girls’ games, Viola lost to Rose Bud 53-21, Salem defeated Omaha 55-44, and Izard County was toppled by Thayer 75-34.

Izard County was able to invoke the mercy rule in one of the boys’ games as they routed Bay 72-39. The Cougars were led by freshman Caleb Faulkner with 30 points, and Justus Cooper scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Izard County remains undefeated in nine games on the year.

The other boys’ contest was won by Valley Springs. The Tigers were able to beat Highland 66-52.
