The American Countryside syndicated radio show has featured stories from almost every state in the U.S. and this week is airing a three-part series focusing on restoration efforts in Calico Rock.

Host Andrew McCrea’s broadcast on Monday introduced the Izard County community of about 1,000 people, noting it was in its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s with almost every storefront occupied. By 2000, only one of the 20 buildings on Main Street had a business inside.

Calico Rock Museum Foundation member Stephen Mitchell told McCrea a group of interested citizens gathered to address revitalizing the river town. From that group came an effort focusing on the arts and creative economy. McCrea says it’s a grassroots effort that can be duplicated across the country.

The final installment in the three-part series airs Wednesday morning at 7:30 and Wednesday afternoon at 5:30 on KLTO-FM. The American Countryside airs Monday through Friday every week courtesy of PepperSauce Boutique inside Mitchell’s Park Street Pharmacy in Calico Rock.
