Smith to seek re-election to Baxter County Quorum Court

A member of the Baxter County Quorum Court will seek re-election. Gary Smith of Lakeview will seek a seventh term as the justice of the peace for District 1.

Smith will run for his seat on the quorum court as a Republican candidate. He says in his announcement his pledge continues to be to spend tax dollars cautiously and only on essential items.

Smith moved to Lakeview in 1999 and has served as District 1’s J.P. since 2009. He had previously occupied the seat from 2005 to 2006 after being appointed by then Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to finish an unexpired term.

Smith served in the United States Marine Corps as a fighter pilot with 3,800 flight hours in F-4, RF-4, A-4 and F-18 aircraft. During his military career, he was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal and two Navy Commendation Medals. He was honorably discharged from the Marines at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Smith has served in many civic organizations. He also is a weather watcher for KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot and a certified coach in track, field and weightlifting for the Special Olympics. In addition, Smith is a past volunteer of Baxter Regional Medical Center and a former poll worker for elections in Lakeview.

Smith has been married to his wife, Sandy, for 40 years. He will seek the Republican nomination in the primary election scheduled for May 22nd.
