The Cotter Symphonic Band earned Superior Ratings on stage and in sight-reading in early March at the ASBOA Region VI Concert Assessment in Bentonville. Thirty-eight bands attended this year’s assessment for Region VI and Cotter was one only 12 bands to receive first superior ratings across the board.

At the assessment, bands are required to perform one prepared piece of music and one piece of sight-reading music for the judges. For the prepared music, bands are allowed to play a piece they have practiced and performed before. The sight-reading music is a piece the band has not seen or played before the competition. The piece is revealed to the bands on the day of the competition and bands are given a short period of time to view the new piece before having to perform it on-spot for the judges.

Bands can receive a rating of three, two, or one on either portion of the competition, with one being the best rating. Cotter received a one rating on both their prepared piece and their sight-reading piece, giving them an overall score of one, the superior rating and highest rating a band can achieve.
