Hackler Intermediate EAST students and a team of fifth graders will recognize Arbor Day Wednesday morning by giving away more than 100 hardwood trees to community members. Information books about trees will also be provided.

The tree giveaway is set for 10:00 until noon in the parking lot of the baseball/softball complex across from Hackler Intermediate on West Road. One tree per family will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

This project will tie in with fifth grade science lessons about biomes and ecosystems and will also support the study of Arkansas Champion Trees.

The Arkansas Champion Trees program is a listing of the largest known specimens of particular tree species in the state. The listing is updated every five years by the Arkansas Forestry Commission and is modeled on the National Register of Big Trees, started by the American Forests organization in 1940.

The students will then complete a culminating project where they create a presentation about a tree significant for them. In the presentations, they will use skills from other subject areas, like circumference from math and tree locations from geography.

Arbor Day is celebrated annually as a time for encouraging individuals and groups to plant trees.
