(AP) – Republican lawmakers are working on two plans designed to protect the right-to-work legislation they passed last year.

The House on Friday gave initial approval to a resolution to amend the state constitution to ban mandatory union fees . If it wins final approval and the Senate agrees, voters will decide the issue Nov. 6.

Meanwhile, the Senate voted to move from Nov. 6 to Aug. 7 the referendum on whether to keep the right-to-work law lawmakers passed and Gov. Eric Greitens signed last year. The law did not take effect because union supporters gathered signatures to force a vote on whether to keep the law.

Proponents say workers should have a choice about joining a union and paying dues. Opponents say banning mandatory fees could cripple workers’ ability to bargain for better wages.
