LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) _ A Pulaski County judge says he will rule by Tuesday on whether he will temporarily halt the state from counting votes this fall on a ballot measure limiting some attorneys’ fees and monetary awards in lawsuits.

Circuit Court Judge Mackie Pierce heard arguments Thursday morning in a lawsuit filed over the ballot measure known as Issue 1.

The proposed constitutional amendment would limit attorneys’ contingency fees and cap punitive and non-economic damages awarded in civil lawsuits. It would also grant lawmakers control over state court rules.

Opponents of the proposal argued the measure combines too many dissimilar subjects into one amendment, known as “logrolling,” while supporters said all four sections of the amendment refer to the courts.
