Two 6-week-old calves have been saved from a sinkhole after they went missing some weeks ago. According to KY3 of Springfield, the owner of the calves, Cody Wallace, says it was just after 7:00 last Thursday evening when he discovered the calves in the an almost 30-feet deep sinkhole.

Realizing he could not get the calves out alone, Wallace called upon the Moody Volunteer Fire Department to help, and they answered the call.

Moody Fire Department’s Rick Leita says firefighter Joseph Lambert was the smallest person and stepped up to make the rescue. During the rescue process, Leita used a wench on his side-by-side to make sure Lambert would be safe.

Lambert rescued the calves one-by-one, but unfortunately one of the calves didn’t survive the night. Reportedly the calf that died had been in the sinkhole for almost two weeks.

Following the rescue, Wallace found an additional sinkhole near the first. He called the Missouri Geological Survey, who plans to send an expert to inspect the area.
