ST. LOUIS (AP) – The Missouri governor’s office says it can’t appoint a special
prosecutor to reopen the investigation into the fatal police shooting of Michael
Brown, despite pressure from Brown’s mother.

Lezley McSpadden has launched an online petition seeking a new investigation
into her son’s 2014 death in Ferguson. The case helped spark the Black Lives
Matter movement.

Republican Gov. Mike. Parson’s spokeswoman said Friday the governor “has
no legal authority to appoint a special prosecutor in any case.”

Brown was 18 and unarmed when he was fatally shot during a confrontation with
officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9th, 2014. Brown was black. Wilson, who is white,
was cleared of wrongdoing and resigned that November.
