A Harrison man was struck and killed Friday night trying to rescue a puppy which ran into the roadway and police are asking for assistance in identifying one of the vehicles which hit the man.

The Harrison Daily Times reports 30-year-old Clay Mitts was walking along the Highway 62/65/412 Bypass in the south part of town near Wilson Springs Road when the puppy ran onto the bypass. Mitts went into the roadway to get the dog and was in the outside northbound lane when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a man from Huntsville, Alabama.

The man stopped his vehicle because he thought he had struck a deer. Police believe Mitts was bending over to get the dog because damage to the man’s car was to the lower part of the vehicle.

A second vehicle allegedly ran over Mitts’ body and continued northbound on the bypass without stopping. Police say they have received conflicting stories about the second vehicle and they are asking anyone who was driving on the bypass Friday night about 10:30 and think they may have hit something to contact the Harrison Police Department.
