A former Briarcliff city employee has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from the city. Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says 40-year-old Teri Jean Buege was arrested Monday and released after posting $7,500 bond.

Buege had already been fired from her job when the investigation began, after the Briarcliff city treasurer contacted the sheriff’s office about missing funds. It’s alleged between December 1st, 2017 and July 3rd of this year, just over $1,300 in public funds were discovered missing from the water department account. This included several deposits in which cash was missing, cash payments received but not recorded or deposited, at least one forged check and the falsification of city records.

Investigators met with Buege last month, and she admitted to the allegations. She is charged with felony counts of forgery and theft of property. She is scheduled to appear in circuit court September 27th.
