A Harrison man accused of killing his estranged wife was arraigned Friday in Boone County Circuit Court. According to the Harrison Daily Times, 36-year-old Matthew Bolen appeared before Judge John Putman through closed circuit television from the Boone County Jail and entered a not guilty plea to capital murder.
Bolen allegedly shot Heaven Bolen January 22nd outside her residence on West Prospect Avenue in Harrison, and she died the next day at a hospital in Springfield. Matthew Bolen was on the run until January 26th when he turned himself in at his father's residence near Batavia.
On the day of the shooting, police responded to the location and found Heaven Bolen face down on the street across from the residence wearing handcuffs. Harrison Police Chief Paul Woodruff says police later found what was described as a "kill bag" inside the residence. It allegedly contained duct tape, wire pliers, a knife, chewing tobacco and the keys to Matthew Bolen's pickup truck. Police believe Matthew Bolen handcuffed his estranged wife and and attempted to take her from the residence. According to Chief Woodruff, Heaven Bolen apparently tried to get away, and Matthew Bolen shot her and fled in her vehicle.
Matthew Bolen was represented by the public defender's office during Friday's hearing. His next hearing is scheduled for March 3rd.
