LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – A new study has found that county-owned rural roads and bridges need $750 million in overhauls as officials begin a statewide push to find money for critical repairs.

The recent study commissioned by the Association of Arkansas Counties found nearly 1,200 bridges considered to be obsolete or structurally deficient. It also estimated that it would take about $154 million to make repairs on some 50,000 miles of county roadways.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that Arkansas ranks 40th in dollars spent per mile and has the nation’s 12th-largest highway system.

State Rep. Dan Douglas says any measure that would address the immediate need for $750 million for county roads and bridges would likely need voters’ approval.
