PRNewsFoto/American SupergroupChicago has kept plenty busy this year between getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and touring with Earth, Wind & Fire. But the band’s longtime singer/bassist, Jason Scheff, has still found time to serve as a judge on a new music competition show.

It’s called American Supergroup, and it debuts on the Pop cable channel tonight at 8 p.m., as well as on MTV Live on Thursday, October 13, and MTV Classic on Friday, October 14.  In addition to Scheff, who replaced original Chicago singer/bassist Peter Cetera back in 1985, the judges’ panel includes young pop-rock star Elle King, R&B singer Aloe Blacc and country star Jennifer Nettles.

Here’s the way it works: 25 finalists are chosen to form five groups of five members each — a singer, guitarist, drummer, bass player and keyboard player, in any number of musical genres. Fans will vote for the bands via social media. The eight-week show will air its finale December 6.

The program’s producer says in a statement, “Aloe, Elle, Jennifer and Jason are four brilliant singer-songwriters that bring tremendous expertise to the table. Audiences will connect with the elite group of gifted musicians who will be mentored by our team of judges and celebrity guests.”
