Credit: David IckesPatti LaBelle and the songwriting and production duo of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff were honored with the 2016 Marian Anderson Award on Tuesday night at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
This year marks the first time since 2008 that multiple artists were honored with the prestigious award, which is named in memory of the legendary late contralto singer and Philadelphia native Marian Anderson.
The “Godmother of Soul” and Gamble & Huff — who co-founded Philadelphia International Records — were treated to a night of performances from a variety of artists. Among the evening’s performers were Ledisi, original Sister Sledge lead singer Kathy Sledge, The Soul Survivors and The Three Degrees — who had a number of big hits that were written and produced by Gamble & Huff, including “When Will I See You Again.”
