The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced prescribed burns will be held for over two months the Twin Lakes Area. Personnel from the Mountain Home Project Office and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will conduct the burns on Corps land surrounding Bull Shoals and Norfork Lakes beginning Wednesday, when weather conditions are favorable, and continuing until the second week of April.

Areas to be burned include timber stands and glade restoration areas at Chapin Point, Minge Point and McGinnis Point on Norfork Lake and Jones Point and Strawberry Point on Bull Shoals Lake. Hunting stands located in any of these areas should be removed immediately.

According to the Corps, periodic burning improves timber stand health, enhances wildlife value and helps restore glade areas to their normal condition. It also reduces limb and leaf accumulations decreasing the odds of a damaging wildfire during the high use summer months. Habitats for wildlife can also be improved as the prescribed burns promote vigorous growth of non-woody vegetation and grasses important to wildlife for food and protective cover. In addition, burning releases important nutrients into the soil and exposes the soil to sunlight stimulating the formation of grasses and other green plants forming fibrous roots which help control erosion.
