Fisher to receive Award for Aspirations in Computing

    Mountain Home High School Senior Anna Fisher has been chosen to receive the National Center for Women and Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. The award, by the Information Technology Research Institute at the Sam M. Walton College for Business, an Academic Alliance member of the center, recognizes her achievements and skills in computing.
   Mountain Home High School Teacher, EAST Facilitator and BOMB Squad Advisor Jackie Meissner, who wrote a letter nominating Fisher for the award. She says Fisher, a member of the BOMB Squad Robotics Team, is a role model for many, particularly girls.

   Fisher, has applied to MIT, the Colorado School of Mining and Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology as well as the University of Arkansas to study mechanical engineering with a minor in computer science. When encouraging girls to consider science, technology, engineering and mathematics, she tells them not to be afraid to try, despite what others may say.

   Fisher, who says she was surprised to be chosen for the award, says looks forward to meeting the other recipients at the awards presentation to be held April 11 at the University of Arkansas.

   The Information Technology Research Institute is an interdisciplinary unit for research within the Walton college. The center's mission is to advance the state of research and practice at the development and use information technology for enhancing the performance of individuals and organizations; provide a forum for multidisciplinary work on issues related to information technology; promote student interest in the study of information technology; and facilitate the exchange of information between the academic and business communities.
