Tom Scholz with Boston’s Gary Pihl (Credit: Kamal Asar)It’s been such a long time since founding Boston guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz came into the world — 70 years, to be exact. In honor of the rocker’s milestone birthday, the city of Boston presented him with a special “Certificate of Recognition.”
The proclamation, signed by Boston mayor Marty Walsh, reads, “In honor of your 70th birthday and In appreciation of your service as an engineer, musician and philanthropist, we thank you for being a dedicated resident of the City of Boston. You have brought Boston’s spirit to people across the globe, from Toledo to Tokyo, where fans are welcomed to ‘Boston’ through music. On behalf of the City of Boston, thank you for dedicating your life to serving others and making the world a better place.”
Scholz founded Boston in 1975, and has always been the mastermind behind the band’s sound, as well as its main songwriter and producer. A graduate of M.I.T. with a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tom also invented the popular line of Rockman guitar effects and amplifiers. In addition, he is a noted supporter of a variety of environmental and animal-rights causes.
In other news, Scholz has been chosen by the readers of Vintage Guitar for induction into the magazine’s Hall of Fame in the Innovator category, in recognition of his work with Boston and as founder of Rockman Amplifiers.
Scholz continues to lead Boston, which will kick off its 2017 Hyper Space Tour on April 14 in Hollywood, Florida.
